This is a memoir about the life of Muhammad Shukri before he was 20 years old, it brings the reader from his early childhood at about age 5 to age 20. During that time, he was living first with his abusive alcoholic father and his mother in northern Morocco, then he became an urchin, doing whatever it took to survive. Around the age of 20, he decided he should learn to read and write. The story is difficult to read as he tells of the homicide of his baby brother by his father, the horrible abuse he suffered at the hands of many people, and his fight to survive. He also spent his days and nights stealing, staying with prostitutes, getting drunk and getting in fights. There is no hero here, however there is a story of survival. ## What else do I wonder about? ## Action ## When do I want to stumble across this? ## Source: Shukrī, Muḥammad, and Paul Bowles.
