topic: [[Changing]] people: #people/simonsinek created: 2023-06-17 *Creating the "why" is the first step towards any individual or organizational change.* This reminds me of [[Stories leverage ideas the same way debt leverages assets]], [[We see the world in stories]], we need to create a story for why, before we can start the process of what. "[[start with why]]" is a mantra to remember when embarking on anything, either [[Thinking as a group vs thinking as an individual]], we need to co-create the why together. If we don't co-create the why, or create the [[sense of urgency]] for change, we cannot get over the [[congnitive entrenchment]], the habits that we created. Organizations, families, people have ways of doing things that are established, and moving away from the normal takes work. Getting motivated for that work requires a clear "why." ##### What would the opposite argument be? [[motivation]] can be created by incentives, or other ways like [[boost]], [[Nudge to allow choice and mold behavior]], and removing obstacles to [[remove to gain]]. [[change is the normal state]], so we don't need to start with Why to get change to occur. tags: #note/statement | #on/motivation | #on/change | #on/management | #on/leadership | #on/learningleader ##### Sources: [[Kotter's 8-Steps]]: [[sense of urgency]]
