# Single Loop Learning
*Learning to do, not exploring what you think, by creating automaticity.*
This reminds me of [[Forming Habits]], the goal is to develop a reflexive response. This is done through [[Deliberate Practice]] with active coaching. The single loop learning is learning to do. This is best employed when there is a clear existing approach like a rubric to master. This is one step in developing mastery. At the beginning of a learning cycle, new learners learn best by [[External Scaffolding]], creating a [[Mental Model]] of a known concept and working towards that.

It's learning one way to do things as well as you can, before trying to experiment in other ways. This uses the [[default mode]] for a narrow range of best practice. This focuses on the learning [[focus on the process not the goal]]. In this case we are not looking for transformative learning, we are looking.
This matters because in the learning process and the path to expertise, learners need to start at this level of doing with a coach. The coach should focus on identifying [[Understanding is wise performance]], which will often be looking to compare their actions to a standard [[Assessing]], finding performance gaps, and coaching to improvement why clearing up misunderstandings.
Ways of achieving single loop learning are through [[Coaching]], Rapid-Cycle [[Deliberate Practice]], [[Mastery Learning]].
### What would the opposite argument be?
Play is also a key way to grow! This could be constraining. Why do you want to make it so formal at the early stages?
