topic: [[Deciding]] created: 2023-07-02 *How I move from data to meaning.* This reminds me of [[it's all data]], all we receive is data, we have to create the story, since [[We see the world in stories]] It's kind of like how teams create a [[shared mental model]] is through the process of interpretation and meaning from different angles and [[Negotiate to Optimize not Compromise]] around that. what is it "Sensemaking or **sense-making** is the process by which people give meaning to their collective experiences. It has been defined as "the ongoing retrospective development of plausible images that rationalize what people are doing" (Weick, Sutcliffe, & Obstfeld, 2005, p. 409). The concept was introduced to organizational studies by Karl E. Weick in the late 1960's and has affected both theory and practice. Weick intended to encourage a shift away from the traditional focus of organization theorists on decision-making and towards the processes that constitute the meaning of the decisions that are enacted in behavior." (wikipedia) why does it matter? Sensemaking is a lot like learning, and like in the [[social-cognitive learning theory]] sensemaking is a social activity. If leaders can harness the various viewpoints of a team, the sensemaking process can be most effective. This allows the best decision making to take place. ##### What would the opposite argument be? Every story is based in a perception, thus is flawed. [[Constructivism]] is not the only way to see the world, it can be measured and identified quantitatively, does that involve sensemaking? tags: #note/idea | #on/meaning | #on/story ##### Sources: > [en.Wikipedia.org/sensemaking](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sensemaking)
