topic: [[Listening]] people: #people/melaniebarlow created: 2023-10-10 *Reset, reframe, engage to promote [[Listening to Understand]] during a speaking up moment.* This reminds me of [[listening is a conversational procedure]], the first piece is to understand that you need to do the procedure. It's kind of like [[Name Claim Aim - Leading with Good Judgment]], first you need to identify the moment. ### Reset, reframe, engage: _both a mental schema and an educational tool_ ![[reset listening speaking up.jpg]] ![[reframe listening speaking up.jpg]] ![[engage listening speaking up.jpg]] ### Why does it matter? “Current healthcare speaking up research predominately focusses on the person speaking up and what inhibits or enables their voice (examples: Raemer et al., 2016; Oner et al., 2018; Schwappach and Richard, 2018). A recent review of interventions to promote speaking up in healthcare identified that the experiences of the receiver of the message are under researched (Jones et al., 2021). The social sciences have long acknowledged equal accountability of speaker and receiver in communication (Berlo, 1965; Oyero, 2010; Schramm, 1954), yet this has seemingly failed to be consistently applied or translated into healthcare speaking up programmes.” (Barlow et al., 2023, p. 2) ##### What would the opposite argument be? If the speaker is more effective, the listener can know it is a speaking up moment. The question is, how do we become a better listener for identifying that speaking up is happening? What is the [[Implementation intentions]] we can build? "When I hear ... I will [[reset, reframe, engage]]." tags: #note/idea | #on/listening | #on/speakingup ##### Sources: Barlow, M., Watson, B., Morse, K., Jones, E., & Maccallum, F. (2023). React, reframe and engage.
