topic: [[overcoming bias]] people: #people/chesterpierce #people/deraldwingsue created: 2024-01-24 *Water torture of the soul.* This reminds me of [[cognitive biases]] and how we can have a [[Blind Spot]] to the impact we have on others. This is why it is _so_ important to to be open to [[Feedback]] and put a [[diversity of identity]] in any leadership team. It's kind of like [[be like water]], how over time persistent water can wear down even the hardest stone! ##### what is it? "**Microaggression** is a term used for commonplace verbal, behavioral or environmental slights, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative attitudes toward stigmatized or culturally marginalized groups" Coined by Dr. Chester Pierce in the 1970's. ##### why does it matter? Over time, these add up to a level of [[cognitive load]] that leads to persistent low-level (or higher) stress for the recipient. It doesn't only undermine their likelihood of success because of the ongoing distraction and need to manage the pressure, but intersects with overt acts of [[racism]] to reduce the likelihood of success. ##### What would the opposite argument be? The _false_ arguments are the myth of meritocracy, the need for "more resilience," and lack of awareness of [[Perspectival knowing]]. tags: #note/idea | #on/racism | #on/bias | #on/dei ##### Sources: [wikipedia:Microaggression](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microaggression) Talks at #IMSH2024 by Dr. Nabil Abazaid at Bellevue-NYU Langone and by Brett Todd at Cedar-Sinai: See notes below Notes from IMSH2024 [Micro aggressions](hook://notes/dt/1705946687)
