topic: [[People Growing]] people: #people/gracemark created: 2024-01-09 *Being present such that you are aware of what state you are in.* This reminds me of [[metacognition]], but awareness is more of an issue of not how you are thinking but how able you are to [[focus attention]] given your situation, what you are doing, and what you have been doing. It's kind of like [[interoception]] for your attentional and cognitive needs. ##### what is it? Meta-awareness is an idea put forth in the book [[Attention Span]], that has the goal of cultivating awareness of your attentional capacity. Are you in a place where you can [[focus attention]]? Or, is your body telling you that you need to have a cognitive rest, so you can come back later with more energy to take on the necessary [[cognitive load]] for the task you are doing. ##### why does it matter? Grace Mark which makes the point that if you can be aware of your attentional capability at a certain moment, and how that came about, you can both manage your attentional capability better, and make sure you are moving towards the goals that you previously set through your [[goal setting]]. ##### What would the opposite argument be? Being in [[Flow]] would produce a mind-space where you lack even perception of yourself, so can you be at your best, highest performing state, if you are also trying to maintain [[meta-awareness]]? Doesn't then meta-awareness take some of your cognitive capacity which by it's very nature would then make it so you can't put your entire energy into an activity? tags: #note/idea | #on/growth | #on/awareness | #on/attention ##### Sources: [[Attention Span]]
