*Design interruptions to pull you out of moments where you are absorbed and may not have awareness.*
This reminds me of [[Nudge to allow choice and mold behavior]], design elements in the [[Design your life]] approach that help you achieve what you want to achieve. In the book [[Attention Span]], Gloria Mark describes hooks as ways of activating your attention away from a "rote" activity back to something that you are hoping to work on. She talks about scheduling a social media break 10 minutes before a meeting, the meeting is the hook that will pull you out of the social media, the social media time is a way to "relax" your attention with a rote activity for 10 minutes.
It's kind of like how OB/GYN has a model of saying "start the clock" during a shoulder dystocia, which gives "hooks" about time specific actions that need to be done at minute 1, 2, 3, etc. This is similar to how I recommend distributing [[situational awareness]] across time and [[ad hoc team]]s, during an intubation, during a airway plan conversation it would sound like:
"We are going to try for 2 attempts with VL Mac, if poor visualization or unable to pass the tube we will try a bougie, if unable to pass the tube we will try a hyper-angulated blade. (The hook) If ever the Sat drops below 90%, let me know and we will stop what we are doing and put in a SGA."
##### what is it?
A hook is a planned process for redirecting attention at a specific time or point.
##### why does it matter?
When you are highly engaged from an attentional standpoint, either in "rote" (low challenge, high engagement) or [[focus attention]] (high challenge/high engagement) activities, it is common to lose [[situational awareness]], which could be time spent, or other [[meta-awareness]]. Hooks can help you by redirecting attention and keeping you from ending up too far down the rabbit hole.
##### What would the opposite argument be?
If you are in [[Flow]], you might be upset or pulled out of things that are actually next-level that were unexpected. In some ways, [[hooks]] are actually like dams set up to stop the flow, and if the goal is to [[be like water]], then the dams prevent that water from flowing. There is a tradeoff between allowing the [[default mode]] to keep on defaulting, and making interruptions happen.
