topic: [[Teaming by Amy Edmondson]] created: 2023-07-02 "_You can't control whether the other person gives you a clear message, but you can control if you convey._" This reminds me of the importance of [[Listening]] to having efficient communication. That listening must be active, and the convey is a good framework. It's kind of like returning the serve to get a volley going. The convey is your opportunity to convey your understanding of the intent of the order. Convey can be either intellectual or emotional. Intellectual conveys you understand their position. Emotional is responding that you understand their emotion. It doesn't mean you agree, it means you heard. This matters because it is [[Listening to Understand]] when responding to close the loop. The motivation to be understood is more important than the motivation to convince others. When people feel understood, they spend less time re-communicating their position. ##### What would the opposite argument be? If you understand, saying it out loud would be a waste of time, just go do. tags: #note/idea ##### Sources: [[🐓 Idea Farm/Deadfall/For myself only/Readwise/Books/Teams That Work]] Chapter 7
