topic: [[Mentoring]] created: 2023-09-30 *Different career path models for different types of people.* This reminds me of [[So Good They Can't Ignore You]], his approach favors transitory and spiral careers if the eventual goal is unique skills and autonomy It's kind of like [[Design my life to live]], and the goal of designing your life over the long term. This explicitly lays out different career path models for different types of people: 1) Linear - careers where you stay in the same job but look for promotions over time, working stepwise up with one employer and have a linear approach 2) Transitory - careers where you make major shifts every decade or so, you have lots of interest 3) Spiral - you make many small moves around a core interest, growing within a range of domains 4) Maybe even others? Such as patchwork, constellations, others? ![[career path shapes.png]] A key is to [[be available for the opportunity]] within the career arc you have chosen. These models, however, allow you to apply different approaches to career paths to both live the life you want now to stay interested and maximize both internal [[motivation]] and long-term career engagement. ##### What would the opposite argument be? Why do you have to have a pre-conceived notion of your career path before you even have a career? Maybe you can only know this after? tags: #note/idea | #on/change | #on/mentor | #on/career ##### Sources: Brooks, A. C., & Winfrey, O.
