topic: [[Feeling]] created: 2025-01-09 *Calling an emotion by its name helps to reduce its power.* ##### what is it? Affect labeling is the act of calling an emotion by its name. ##### why does it matter? “in many situations, focusing on our emotions can dampen them. The action of naming the emotions felt, called “affect labeling”, can serve as a form of implicit emotional regulation” (LeBlanc et al., 2024, p. 7) “Affect labeling consists of either labeling one’s own emotions (“I feel anxious”) or an aspect of a situation that triggered the emotion (“That scenario was stressful”) [84]. In addition to dampening an emotional experience, affect labeling can decrease the impact of the emotion on immediate as well as subsequent performance” (LeBlanc et al., 2024, p. 7) ##### This reminds me of [[name it to tame it]] ##### What would the opposite argument be? Sometimes, people are better off allowing themselves to internally regulate, and affect labeling should be a choice not a requirement. People are pretty good at down-regulating usually. tags: #note/idea | #on/emotion | #on/learningleader ##### Sources: LeBlanc, V. R., Brazil, V., & Posner, G. D. (2024).
