Understanding is the process of creating meaning from ideas. This is linked to the idea of *Transfer.* Can you move from the information given to a new idea, concept, application, connection.
Knowledge would be just the ideas. So called, *inert* ideas. These do little if any good to the learner.
Understanding requires that the knowledge be put to use creating meaning, relationships, connections, etc. The information must be used, stretched, applied, fitted. Sometimes the efforts won't work, but it's the effort that counts..
The explanation of _why?_ can be helpful in creating meaning and understanding. _What are the implications of this?_
[[Zettelkasten]] captures an idea that can be known, but [[Knowledge Value Making]] requires the capture of an idea, then the connections.
**Questions to build or demonstrate understanding?**
- What does this connect to?
- What does this remind me of?
- What ideas does this change?
- When have I come across this lately?
Focusing on _transfer_ outside the narrow walls of the knowledge being sought allows those connections to be made that create long-term [[Learning]].
The best _transfer_ is [[Learner-Centered]], specific to the individual and their idiosyncratic mind.
In [[Bloom's Mastery For Learning 1968.pdf]] this realm is likely considered _application_.
[[Elaboration]] is a form of transfer, the process of creating more, moving outside the basic knowledge.
