*If you stop running everyone around you will pass you, because they're all running!*
This reminds me of the [[hedonic treadmill]], how when you gain something, you accommodate to it quickly.
It's kind of like [[Blue Ocean Strategy]], the need to stay out of the red ocean, and [[don't chase the soccer ball]], go where others aren't in order to reduce competitive pressure.
This is an idea from evolutionary biology that species need to continue to evolve or they will become extinct because the species around them are continuously putting competitive pressure, as is the changing context.
This matters because systems like Capitalism and Evolution don't care if you survive, they only care if the system survives. And for a system like that, [[remove to gain]], [[forgetting is the key to remembering]].
##### What would the opposite argument be?
When you have found your place of comfort, it's ok to rest every now and then. Growth actually happens during the resting phase, you see and fill during diastole.
Other competing arguments include the [Red King Hypothesis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_King_hypothesis) where a set of individuals slowly co-evolve and become relatively stable as a cohort within a certain set of contextual conditions. They are more resilient because of their co-evolutionary support.
Switching between these two ways of evolving (or maybe even a species can do both at the same time, might be in competition with some species and in symbiosis with others?) may depend upon the conditions.
