Read quickly and write slowly.
How to make smart notes recommends a 3 step [[Knowledge Value Making]] process:
1. Make quick notes - jot things down that you think are important, these are just quick first impressions
2. Make bibliographic notes - these are the text refernces with quotes, page numbers, etc.
3. transribe these into a formal note: this is the real work that I have't been doing. I have been taking the first and second types of notes. It's the coming back and making it your own that is different. p. 23
4. add links
5. The next steps are gathering the notes to make the argument
6. Write the skeleton
7. Look for and fill in the holes with more of the same process
8. compile, edit, and create your draft
