*In the imperfect beauty that is our particular skill, what stages of growth are we at in different foundational ideas?*![[9903BAE4-BBF9-4482-85D9-7891619CB797_1_102_o.jpeg]]
##### what is it?
This metaphor is a beautiful demonstration of breaking down a domain into parts that have possibility or are developed. Originally from the Boy Scouts of America (as best I can tell through cursory internet searches), this is a technique to help people reflect on their development. What is one part of this skill that is developed (rose), in process (bud) or is a challenge (thorn).
##### why does it matter?
By breaking a domain into micro-skills, and clarifying next developmental steps within those micro-skills, or areas to focus on, you can think about how to strengthen the overall skill with more likelihood of success. Since [[Barbells make you stronger]], in this case the barbells are the strengths (rose) and thorns (weaknesses) and by focusing on those you can make progress.
##### This reminds me of
[[The writers BASE]] reminds me of [[self-intimacy]], knowing yourself deeply. The framework helps you break down your improvement goals into helpful domains. When you can identify strengths AND weaknesses, as well as areas ready to grow, you can do a better job identifying goals.
##### What would the opposite argument be?
Are goals the best way to grow? Or, should you work on your identity? Frames drive behavior, emotion drives behavior, Rose, Bud, and Thorn don't work at that level, they work at the level of the domain. Another way to use this tool, then, would be to identify the domains to work on, then think about enabling and inhibiting frames and behaviors within those areas.
