*I've paused the sim, now what?*
##### what is it?
A reflective pause is taking a moment to put a pause on a group participating in a simulation, a key question is, who leads the reflection?
In this study, the medical students did a reflective pause prompted by a cognitive aid with several questions.
“The leading questions asked during the pauses were five: “Did I miss something important to check?”“What did I check unnecessarily?”“Did I miss any important intervention?”“What redundant interventions have I applied?” and “How to improve my performance?” The participants were asked to verbalize their reflection (ie, think aloud) to ensure that they are involved in the activity.” (Lee et al., 2024, p. 83)
##### why does it matter?
These questions were designed to prompt metacognitive moments, but “Metacognitive activities such as self-reflection are challenging for novices,” (Lee et al., 2024, p. 87)
##### This reminds me of
[[Coaching]] vs [[Debriefing]], and the question of when do you coach vs when do you debrief?
##### What would the opposite argument be?
A question to consider is, are these metacognitive self-reflective questions extraneous [[cognitive load]]? What are the short versus long-term implications?
