*We speak with four beaks and hear with four ears.*
##### what is it?
The four sides model is a model of communication, both listening and speaking, that accounts for some problems with communication sending and receiving. As the speaker tries to send messages they concentrate on one or more of the areas, whereas the receiver may concentrate on other of the areas.
##### why does it matter?
For example, when a leader speaks, they very often will not focus on the relationship the way the receiver does when the receiver is lower in the hierarchy.
##### This reminds me of
[[The great enemy of communication, we find, is the illusion of it.]]
##### What would the opposite argument be?
As in all models this takes a complex multidimensional idea and tries to jam it into a box (literally in this case, a box). [[all models are wrong but some are useful]], this model is useful at showing why communication doesn't work, but what do we do to improve our communication based on this model?
