The goal is not finding all the great ideas, it's finding all the ideas, which opens possibilities. A [[Leading]] role is prompting and directing the brainstorming session. It's kind of like [[Negotiate to Optimize not Compromise]], the whole goal is getting new ideas on the table. ### Set some ground rules Some people feel comfortable in brainstorming sessions while others may need more encouragement to share their ideas. Set some initial rules to create an environment where everyone feels free to speak. Here are some brainstorming rules to follow: Brainstorming follows Osborn’s two rules - [[collection of ideas and judgment about those ideas are two separate processes]] - first just work to collect without judgment - Generate as many testable ideas as possible because [[quantity has a quality all its own]] - Keep the meeting free of judgments. - Give others a chance to speak. - Think of as many ideas as possible. - All ideas have potential. - Accept and build-off each other's ideas. - Redirect ideas that may not benefit the team. Different Types of Brainstorming: - Brainwriting: After learning the purpose of the session, each team member separately writes down their ideas. This gives people a chance to think of their own original ideas. - Starbursting: Instead of sharing ideas, everyone comes up with as many questions about the topic of the session as possible. This ensures the group addresses every part of the project before spending time on sharing ideas. - Rapid ideation: This is when you limit brainstorming sessions to a short amount of time. After learning about the topic, team members write down as many ideas as possible. This matters because brainstorming can get lots of ideas, or other questions about an idea, on the table. It can also be used to involve people in a process improvement. It can get silly which can be fun. ### What would the opposite argument be? - Don't bother, most of these ideas will be useless. The same people will just talk and talk. Needs active [[facilitating]] to get the good ideas out there. ## Sources: https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/career-development/how-to-run-brainstorming-session
