*Paradoxically, learning to see yourself more clearly is not always possible and is not associated with increased learning of the actual skill.* This reminds me of [[Blind Spot]], and how we really can never see [[your leaky face]] It's kind of like how inversely paradoxically [[assessment for learning]], when linked to coaching and guidance, assessment is linked to learning, as opposed to self-assessment. Self-assessment is an idea that needs to be put to rest as an important learning process. Self-assessment can be used when guided, specific (narrow), and for learning not for assessment. This matters because if we put energy into trying to teach self-assessment, we are taking energy away from valid approaches to improving performance. Improved self-assessment is not linked to improved performance, and in low-performers teaching self-assessment actually often reduces motivation. ### What would the opposite argument be? If people cannot self-assess, they are likely to be blind to their own performance. ## Sources: Yates, N., Gough, S., & Brazil, V. (2022).
